Dell EMC Powerstore 3000T installation

Working as a Technical Consultant at Tech Data Belgium, I got the change to do the first unboxing & configuration of our very own PowerStore 3000T demo unit. This appliance will be available for Demo, POC & testing to our partners.

The Dell EMC PowerStore 3000T consists of 2 redundant nodes and lots of NVMe power. PowerStore can scale-up with more capacity and scale-out with extra appliances in the cluster.

1. Let’s get physical

1.1 Power & Network

Each node has 1 powersupply to feed & 3 network cables to start with with 1 UTP going to the management port and 2 UTP’s to go into Port 0 & 1 of the Mezz card. Our demo systems has BaseT, but this can also be 10/25 Gbs Fibre Optical with SFP+.

1.2 Powerup

The boot sequence will take a couple of minutes before the appliance discovery can take place. At first it will sound like a plane taking off but after a couple of minutes the volume goes down.

1.3 Find the tag in the front between the disks

2. Discovery & Configuration

2.1 Run PowerStore Discovery Utility (download from support.dell.com)

The Discovery tool uses the IDN network and uses the Zeroconf networking capabilities. Make sure all other network interfaces are disabled before running the tool.

If PowerStore Discovery Utility cannot be used, you can also do a direct-connect inital config. Therefor you will have to direct attach your laptop with the service lan port and use an ip in the same range as the one you need to connect to:

2.2 Login to PowerStore Manager to configure the appliance

Login with default credentials

Password Change required

Provide a clustername & choose between BLOCK-only or UNIFIED

Configure the Management Network by assigning 1 ip address to the cluster and 3 extra IP’s.

Storage Network requires a seperate vlan for Storage network.

When doing this on PowerStore X, you need more free ip addresses and also will have to configure the vmotion network.

Add the DNS & NTP server information.

The next screen you will be able to validate the information before starting the configuration process.

By selecting “View Full Details” you get the overview of your input. Please verify carefully before proceeding.

Let’s continue… next next next

The last step is to connect CloudIQ, the online platform that combines Machine Intelligence and Human Intelligence to provide storage administrators with the intel they need to take quick action and morre efficiently manage their Dell EMC environment. Reduce risk, plan ahead and improve productivity.

And then the PowerStore Cluster is configured and ready to go !

2.3 Your first Login to the PowerStore Manager gui

use your PowerStore credentials

Dell EMC PowerStoreOS 2.0 & PowerStore 500 T

Dell EMC PowerStore April 2021 updates

April 2021 brought some updates on Dell EMC PowerStore and so I tried to make a summary of the most important changes to the platform.
* PowerStore 500 T
* PowerStoreOS 2.0

PowerStore 500T

PowerStore 500T

**PowerStore 500T offers Block-File-VVOL storage, no AppsOn.

** The 500T comes with dual Intel 4214 12c 2.2G Cascade & 192GB RAM and can have max 25 drives per appliance, so no expansion enclosures can be added at this time.

**No slots are reserved for NVRAM write caching drives as in the higher models of Powerstore. Internal DRAM caching is introduced.

PowerStoreOS 2.0

** NVMe SCM drives can now be mixed with NVMe SSD & SAS SSD drives and used as a dedicated metadata tier, improving performance.

** PowerStoreT will support NVMe-FC Connectivity with 32GB FC I/O Modules in PowerStoreOS 2.0 = End-to-End NVMe.

** Dual ethernet switches are still required in PSOS2, but initial configuration wizard can be completed with only the management network cabling connected.

** PowerStore X Clustering supported as of PowerStore OS 2.0

** DRE (Dynamic Resiliency Engine): choose between single drive or double drive failure (be aware, you cannot change it back afterwards)

** Multipe Subnets supported over the Storage Network for multitenancy and traffic isolation

How to reset the vCenter Server Appliance root password ?

It happens, you set a password and say to yourself “Ok, I’ll write it down later” but in fact you don’t and later on “Computer says no!”

Well that happened to me (again) with my vCenter Server Appliance root password.
Don’t panic, there’s an easy way to reset the password… see below.

  1. Take a snapshot of the vCenter Server Appliance.
  2. Open the VMware Remote Console
  3. Reboot the vCenter VM and when VCSA Photon OS starts, press e key to enter the GNU GRUB Menu.
  4. Append following value to the end of the linux line  “rw init=/bin/bash
    See screenshot below…
  5. F10 to continue the boot
  6. Run following commands to change the password:
    # mount -o remount,rw /
    # passwd
    # umount /
    # reboot -f

Dell EMC VXRAIL useful tips & trics

VXRAIL Manager election:
During powerup the vxrail manager vm will start on one of the nodes.
To find out which host is running the VM:
– connect to the DCUI (login with root Passw0rd !)
– enable ESXi shell
– ALT-F1 to open ESXi shell
– run following commands:
#vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms
#vim-cmd vmsvc/power.get 1
– ALT-F2 to exit ESXi shell

How to find the installed VXRAIL code on the ESXi host:
#esxcli software vib list | grep marvin

How to change the primary IP of the VXRAIL manager VM:
#vxrail-primary –setup –vxrail-address –vxrail-netmask –vxrail-gateway –no-roll-back –verbose
#vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms (find the ID of the vm)
#vim-cmd vmsvc/power.get 1
#vim-cmd vmsvc/power.off 1
#vim-cmd vmsvc/power.on 1

How to change VLAN settings
#esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup list
#esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup set -p “VM Network” -v 120

Some esxcli commands
ESXi build: #esxcli system version get
Hostname: #esxcli system hostname get

enter Maintenance Mode: #esxcli system maintenanceMode set –-enable true
exit Maintenance Mode: #esxcli system maintenanceMode set –enable false
Status Maintenance Mod: #esxcli system MaintenanceMode get

Shutdown ESXi (first set maintenance mode): #esxcli system shutdown reboot -d 20 -r “Test reboot”
IPv4 Config of all interfaces: #esxcli network ip interface ipv4 get
Command list: #esxcli esxcli command list

How to test ESRS functionality:
download curl
“curl -kX POST –user administrator@vsphere.local: https:///rest/vxm/private/callhome/alerts/test”
ESRS is working fine if you receive following respone: “{“event_code”:”MYSTICFFFE”,”event_time”:”1580805169″,”description”:”Test call home from VxRail Manager”}”

“work in progress…”
